Imagine FPL had a baby with WhatsApp… Announcing Tengi!

by Chris | Apps, News

UPDATE: Tengi have now given away over £13k to 1,755 people, including two £1,000 winners. Read about the first one here »

tengi

Tengi is instant messaging with a twist: chatting gets you tickets for a weekly free prize draw, with a top prize of £1,000 in cash and hundreds of smaller cash prizes. They’re giving us FPLers a 1 month head-start!

That means that, apart from a handful of other users from beta testers and local press, you guys will be the first to use the app for a whole month (until the end of August) and will have a great chance of scooping some prizes. Why are they doing this? Well, they’ve spotted that FPL and Tengi are two peas in a pod, so if you like FPL, you’re also likely to like Tengi. The chat app market is very competitive so they have to hit it hard to gain traction, so I’m hoping you reciprocate by giving it a go and spreading the word 🙂

How does it work?

Tengi works just like any other chat app:

– Send text, emoticons, photos, videos and audio messages for free.
– Set up group chats with your friends, family and anyone with shared interests.
Tengi is available to anyone with an Apple or Android mobile phone and a SIM card, and messages are sent via the internet (including WiFi).

The more friends you have on Tengi, and the more you chat, the more tickets you get – so the better your chances of winning.

Free Weekly Prize Draw

In Tengi there is a new prize draw each week, with the opportunity to win £1,000 in cash, plus hundreds of smaller cash prizes. Like FPL, the prize draw is free to enter: all you have to do is use Tengi each week to chat to your friends:

– The more friends you have on Tengi, the better, because you get tickets when your friends join Tengi, and when they win prizes.
– The more you chat on Tengi, the better. You get tickets for regular daily use, and for the total amount of time you spend chatting each week.
– At the end of each week, your tickets are entered into the free prize draw. The more you have, the better your chances of winning.

Who’s behind this?

The boss at Tengi is a chap called Neil Laycock who used to be the CEO of Plusnet in Sheffield. He’s a consumer champion who’s passionate about service. Under his leadership in 2008 Plusnet won 9 out of 11 categories in the annual USwitch awards. He went on to be the MD of www.patient.info and grew it into the largest independent health information site in the UK. The entire site is free to use and is even used by most GP’s in primary care as their primary information resource. He’s an interesting guy with interesting ideas. He feels the consumer in the world of social media is being short changed and has come up with Tengi to ‘re-balance’ the relationship between consumers and their platform provider.

I am not involved with Tengi but have met Neil and I am 100% positive that his approach is the same as mine on FPL. Revenue comes from in-app advertising and sales of “Stickers”, NOT spamming, deception, or selling your details. It already seems a no-brainer to me if you already use a chat app but (and just to declare my interest) they are promising to return the favour to FPL by giving us free advertising during their main launch campaign later this year. We all win!

Enjoy…And win some prizes! 🙂
